Punjab Kings’ Shashank Singh’s IPL 2026 isn’t going particularly well. Here’s why.

Shashank Singh’s nightmare in the field continued during yet another high-scoring game played between Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday. Asked to bat first, SRH’s Heinrich Klaasen (69) and Ishan Kishan (55) made PBKS pay for their butter fingers as the Pat Cummins-led side registered a 33-run victory over Shreyas Iyer’s men after posting 235/4 on the scoreboard. The win marked SRH’s jump to the top position on the points table.

As for Punjab, this was their third loss on the trot, and their continued fielding woes played a handy (no pun intended) part in their fall from the throne to the second position. To nobody’s shock, PBKS’s poor fielding hogged the spotlight as the three dropped catches proved costly on a night where there were three offenders, namely Cooper Connolly, Shashank Singh, and Lockie Ferguson.

But it was Singh, who faced the brickbats from Punjab Kings fans, and soon Singh’s “aura loss” in the ongoing IPL 2026 became an inescapable meme for the public live-tweeting the match on X (formerly Twitter).

Shashank Singh: The Serial Offender

Punjab Kings spinner Yuzvendra Chahal’s miseries continued as sloppy fielding helped SRH batters capitalise and go big. In the 9th over, an over after Cooper Connolly had already dropped a dolly offered by Ishan Kishan batting on 9, Heinrich Klaasen banged one in the on-side area but failed to get the connection he had hoped for. Fortunately for him, Singh was positioned at the deep backward square and seemed like a child lost in the park. Klaasen, too, was at 9 when he was dropped. The SRH scorecard read 102-2 in 8.3 overs. The South African went on to hammer 69, rubbing salt into the wounded Punjab fielding. Chahal, despite bowling his heart out for Punjab, was robbed yet again.

Shashank Singh’s Doozie Fielding In IPL

Trying to make sense of Singh’s fielding disasters, Punjab Kings coach Ricky Ponting, speaking to broadcasters, extended sympathy towards his player. “Poor Shashank Singh, it seems the ball is flying everywhere he’s going,” the Aussie veteran said.

Ponting wasn’t embellishing. Singh has now five drops across just three matches. He left his coach, Ponting, frustrated after the finisher dropped three catches on a single night. Three. These drops were against Lucknow Super Giants. Punjab did win the match against LSG by a handsome margin, but Singh’s dropped catches dampened their celebrations.

But perhaps the costliest mistake committed by Singh in the ongoing season came against Delhi Capitals when he squandered a chance to send KL Rahul on 12 off Arshdeep Singh’s delivery. KL went on to score an unbeaten 152, the highest by an Indian batter in IPL history.

Shashank Singh Becomes A Fodder For Memes

One has to feel for the Punjab player. Coming from blistering successive seasons, where he hammered 354 and 350 in IPL 2024 and IPL 2025 respectively, Singh is yet to make an impact with the bat, thanks to his top-order batters (Cooper Connolly, Prabhsimran Singh, Shreyas Iyer) in sublime form. Singh has managed 74 runs in 8 outings for PBKS this season.

But. The ball refuses to stick in his palms, and that is where all his troubles start. IPL fans and trolls alike have not spared Singh over his continued mishaps, and it has, unfortunately for Singh, become an ongoing trend on X to mock the Punjab player.

Luckily for Singh, Punjab has had successfully evaded these uncomfortable fielding setbacks on numerous occasions due to their dominant batting performances, but the Wednesday night encounter between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings, where the latter franchise dropped three catches, eventually made the difference between the winning and losing sides.
