Several injured after BMW rams into crowd in Germany; police open fire, suspects flee

Several people were injured after a BMW was deliberately driven into a group of people in Neustadt am Rbenberge, a town near Hanover in northern Germany, shortly before midnight on Monday. Police fired shots at the vehicle, but its occupants fled and remained at large, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

Four to five people sustained injuries ranging from minor to severe, a police spokesperson said. All the injured were taken to hospital, but none was in a life-threatening condition.

A police patrol conducting a routine traffic check nearby witnessed the incident and intervened to stop the vehicle. Officers fired shots at the BMW, but the suspect or suspects escaped on foot, leaving the car at the scene.

Police launched a search involving numerous officers and a helicopter. A police dog was also reportedly deployed. The scene was cordoned off for several hours as investigators collected evidence.

Initial information suggested that those involved knew one another, the police spokesperson said, according to Reuters. Authorities had not disclosed further details about their relationship or established a motive for the incident.

German newspaper Bild reported that other vehicles were also damaged during the incident, including one with a smashed rear window. It was not immediately clear whether all the damage was directly connected to the car ramming.

The number and identities of the suspects remained unclear, and police had not announced any arrests in the reports available on Tuesday. Investigations into the circumstances of the incident were continuing.
