Senior IPS officer Rakesh Aggarwal was appointed as the director general of the National Investigation Agency on Wednesday.

Aggarwal, a 1994 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Himachal Pradesh cadre, is the special director general in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) at present. He has also been holding the additional charge of the post of DG, NIA.

According to an order issued by the personnel ministry, the appointments committee of the cabinet has approved his appointment as DG, NIA for a tenure up to August 31, 2028, the date of his superannuation.

Reports said Aggarwal will be taking over from incumbent DG Sadanand Date, whom the government prematurely repatriated to Maharashtra. The officer was appointed as the special DG of the NIA on September 29, 2025, on an in-situ basis by temporarily upgrading his existing additional director general (ADG) post for two years or until further orders.

Date is reportedly expected to take charge of the post of Maharashtra DGP, as the incumbent 1988-batch IPS officer Rashmi Shukla is scheduled to complete her two-year fixed tenure on December 31, 2025.

A report by The New Indian Express said Aggarwal is considered to be a seasoned counter-terrorism and internal security professional with extensive experience in handling complex investigations. He has been associated with several high-profile cases involving terror financing, radicalisation networks and cross-border linkages, the report said.
