Top-seeded Indian men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty withdrew from the Swiss Open on Friday before their quarterfinal match due to a shoulder issue with Rankireddy.
Rankireddy and Shetty were set to face Denmark’s Christian Faust Kjaer and Rasmus Kjaer in the Super 300 badminton tournament’s last-eight stage.
The 25-year-old from Amalapuram, known for one of the fastest smashes in world badminton, has frequently faced problems with his right shoulder.
In 2023, Rankireddy set a Guinness World Record for the fastest smash in badminton, reaching 565 km/h.
“It is an old injury, hopefully he can recover fast. This will take a week at least,” Malaysian coach Tan Kim Her was quoted as saying to PTI.
The injury appears to be from overuse rather than a new trauma, a common issue for elite athletes competing at high intensity.
The Indian pair had played a high-intensity 74-minute match on Thursday, winning 21-15, 15-21, 28-26 against Japan’s Hiroki Okamura and Kyohei Yamashita in the pre-quarterfinals. World No. 4 men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty progressed to the round of 16 after securing a 21-19, 21-19 victory over Singapore’s Eng Keat Wesley Koh and Junsuke Kubo.
When Will Satik-Chirag Be In Action Next?
Satwik and Chirag, the Asian Games champions, are next scheduled to compete at the Badminton Asia Championships from April 7 to 12. The Indian pair won the title in 2023.
