A day after stone pelting and arson took place over the court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal, the administration has restricted the entry of “outsiders” into the district without prior orders of the authorities.
The death toll in the violence rose to four. Three people were killed in the violence yesterday and another person has succumbed to his injuries, the police said.
The police have filed an FIR against Samajwadi Party MP Ziaur Rahman Barq for allegedly inciting riots.
Weapons Recovered, People Detained: Police
The police said that 25 rioters were arrested in connection with violence which took place on Sunday when the survey was underway at the mosque premises.
Several kinds of weapons were recovered from the detained persons, which also included two women, living in the Nakhasa police station area. Firing took place from their residence, Superintendent of Police (SP) Krishan Kumar said.
This comes as four people were killed while several others were injured in the clashes between the police and the protesters who shouted slogans, and threw stones at the cops while the survey was underway. The protestors set vehicles on fire, after which the police used tear gas to disperse the mob.
The survey team arrived at the spot early in the morning and started its work, when locals gathered outside, leading to violence in the area. The mosque is in the middle of a legal battle over claims that it was been built over the Harihar temple that had once stood at the site.
