The demand for electric vehicles i.e. EV is increasing rapidly in India. A total of 2,98,448 electric vehicles were sold in the country in August 2026, which is 52.9% more than the same month last year i.e. August 2025.

With this increase, the share of EV in the automobile market has increased to 12.3%, which was 9.5% a year ago. Automobile dealers’ organization FADA has released these figures on August 8. According to FADA, this has proved to be the best August month ever for electric mobility in India.

67% growth in two-wheeler segment, 60% share in total sales

1,83,204 electric two-wheelers were sold in the country in August. In August 2025, this figure was 1,09,673 units. That means this segment has registered an increase of 67.05% on annual basis. The share of EV in the two-wheeler market remained above 10%. Now, more than 60% of the total electric vehicles sold in the country are two-wheelers.

Sales of commercial vehicles increased three times

This was the fastest increase in sales of electric commercial vehicles in August 2026. While only 1,631 commercial EVs were sold in August last year, this figure almost tripled to 4,702 units in August this year.

FADA President said- New August record made in every category

FADA President Sai Giridhar said that August 2026 has been the biggest August month ever for electric mobility in India. Each of the four categories of EV retail (two-wheeler, three-wheeler, passenger car and commercial) has set a new record for the month of August. There has not been a single category in which a record has not been made.

Why are EV sales increasing?

According to auto experts, there are mainly three main reasons behind this surge in EV sales:

  • Lower running costs: The running cost of electric vehicles is much lower compared to the rising prices of petrol and diesel.
  • Expansion of charging infrastructure: The number of charging stations is increasing in small and big cities of the country.
  • New models and options: Vehicle manufacturing companies are launching new EV models offering better mileage/range in an affordable range.
