Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday accused Russia of using citizens from 47 countries in its war against Ukraine, naming India, Nepal, Ghana and several other countries.
Addressing the UN General Assembly in New York, Zelenskyy urged governments whose citizens had become involved in the war to prevent Russia from drawing more people into the conflict.
“We know that Russia uses citizens of 47 countries in its war,” Zelenskyy said, listing countries including Ghana, Nepal, Tajikistan, India, Yemen, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Cuba, Belarus, Sudan and South Africa.
He alleged that some foreign nationals had ended up in Russia through deception and urged the countries concerned to act.
“Do not let Putin drag you into this war,” Zelenskyy told representatives at the UN.
North Korean Troops And New Alliances
Zelenskyy also highlighted Russia’s military ties with North Korea, saying Ukraine had captured two North Korean prisoners of war who were later sent to South Korea.
The Ukrainian president used the example to underline what he described as Russia’s growing reliance on foreign personnel in the conflict.
He also pointed to Ukraine’s expanding defence cooperation with other countries, particularly in drone technology. Zelenskyy said Kyiv had signed a drone agreement with Finland and a security agreement with Australia that includes drones. He added that Ukraine was preparing a separate drone deal with Canada.
Warning Of A Harsh Winter
Zelenskyy warned that Ukraine could respond to Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure by striking Russian heating and energy facilities during the winter.
He said Ukrainians understood the coming winter could be difficult but suggested Kyiv would seek to impose costs on Russia in response to attacks on Ukraine.
His remarks came as Washington pushed for an understanding between Russia and Ukraine to stop attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington was working towards such an arrangement.
Zelenskyy also said Ukraine’s aim was to reduce Russia’s ability to finance the war rather than destroy its fuel supplies.
“When someone gives Russia more money through trade, they give this war more time. That is exactly why we insist on limiting trade with the aggressor, and why we are burning Russia’s revenues ourselves,” he said, calling for restrictions on trade that helps fund Moscow’s war effort.
