British company Rolls-Royce has expressed its desire to build India’s first electric warship in partnership with the Indian Navy. The company has said that it will fully cooperate in building and launching electric warships for India.

Rolls-Royce Senior Vice President Abhishek Singh said that we have hybrid-electric and full-electric propulsion systems for the Indian Navy. These systems are designed to save fuel and increase operational range.

Earlier on October 9, the Carrier Strike Group (CSG) from the United Kingdom had reached Mumbai with a warship named HMS Prince of Wales. Rolls-Royce’s MT30 gas turbine engine has been used in this ship.

MT30 engine produces as much electricity as a small city

The company’s MT30 gas turbine engine is a powerful and compact engine. The two MT30 gas turbine alternators onboard HMS Prince of Wales, combined with four diesel generators, produce 109 MW of electricity.

This is enough to power a small city. The CSG also consists of HMS Richmond and a submarine powered by Rolls-Royce’s Spey Marine gas turbine and nuclear systems.

Ship brought to India to show technology

Rolls-Royce Director Alex Gino said the British warship’s visit to India was a great opportunity for Indian defense officials. This gave him the opportunity to closely know the company’s world’s best naval technology.

Rolls-Royce believes that this technology can increase the operational reach, strength and readiness of the Indian Navy manifold.
