Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy triggered a political firestorm with a surprise confession that the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection (HYDRAA) was inspired by German Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler.
While speaking at an event in Bengaluru on Saturday, Reddy said the word ‘Hydra’ was the favourite word of Adolf Hitler and that he had formed the core team of HYDRAA that “could assassinate anyone.” The remark sparked widespread confusion, given the lack of any historical evidence linking Hitler to the word.
“Hydra, the word is Hitler’s favourite word. His core team was called Hydra, which could assassinate anyone. So, I have taken inspiration from Hitler and named it as ‘HYDRAA’,” he said.
Reddy’s remarks referred to the creation of a special agency called HYDRAA, whose core objectives include removing encroachments on government land, open spaces, parks, lakes and footpaths in the Hyderabad metropolitan region. His government has deployed 3,000 retired Army personnel and others to this task force.
“Today ask anyone who dares to encroach any water body in my State or in my Hyderabad. I demolished like anything. You go and Google, and you can see Iran and Israel or anything you can compare with those demolitions with these demolitions,” he said.
‘Emergency Mindset Out In Open’
The remark drew fierce backlash from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which demanded an unconditional apology from the Chief Minister for claiming to take inspiration from Hitler, who was responsible for killing six million Jews during Nazi rule in Germany.
“Revanth Reddy, now openly boasting that Hitler inspired him to create HYDRAA and is comparing his demolitions in Hyderabad to those in war-torn countries like Iran and Israel, echoing his leader Rahul Gandhi’s language,” said Union Minister G Kishan Reddy.

“From Emergency to Hitler – Congress has always muzzled people. Revanth Reddy needs to hang his head in shame and tender an unconditional apology to the people of Telangana,” he added.
What Is HYDRAA?
HYDRAA is a special agency created by the Telangana government in 2024 with the objective of protecting government land and open spaces, checking encroachments of carriageways and footpaths, along with disaster management support and other duties such as traffic coordination.
The government said rapid urbanisation and widespread encroachments on lakes, drains, and public land were worsening flooding and putting pressure on infrastructure. The government claims to have recovered Rs 1.26 lakh crore in lands and assets in Telangana.
