Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy is set to face trial after one of his dogs allegedly attacked a teenager and two other dogs after escaping from his home, according to reports in Spain published on Tuesday.
According to a court document dated January 7 and cited by AFP, the private prosecution is seeking a six-month prison sentence for alleged injury caused through gross negligence, in addition to financial penalties.
The public prosecutor’s office is instead requesting fines in relation to a minor offence of causing injury.
Spanish media reported that the incident occurred in January 2023 after four dogs belonging to Mendy escaped from his property in the upscale Madrid suburb of Alcobendas when the gate was reportedly left open as a vehicle entered.
The reports said one of the dogs attacked another woman’s pet, which was seriously injured and later had to be euthanised. A 17-year-old boy was then allegedly bitten while attempting to intervene, along with a relative’s dog that he had been walking.
Mendy, 31, joined Real Madrid from French club Lyon in 2019. The left-back has endured an injury-hit spell in Spain, with multiple fitness setbacks affecting his time at the club.
