US indicts former Cuban president Raúl Castro in Florida over 1996 downing of two civilian planes, urges Cubans to embrace a new path, highlighting his long rule and reforms.

The US administration has criminally indicted Cuba’s former president Raúl Castro as Washington called on the communist-ruled island’s people to embrace a “new path”.
According to AFP, an indictment unsealed in a federal court in Florida charged the influential former president over the 1996 downing of` two civilian planes manned by anti-Castro pilots.
Who Is Raúl Castro?
Born on June 3, 1931, Raúl Castro is one of the last surviving leader of the Cuban revolution. Brother of the late Fidel Castro, he is the youngest of the siblings.
During Fidel’s rule as Cuba’s chief executive after the revolution, Raúl Castro spent decades as the country’s armed forces minister. He was the second most powerful person in the Cuban government and Fidel’s designated successor.
In 2006, ailing Fidel provisionally installed his brother at the top before finally resigning formally as head of state in 2008.
According to CNN, when Raúl resigned in 2021 as First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, the highest position of power on the island, it marked the end of almost six decades Castro rule.
During his rule, Raúl introduced many reforms such as “Cuban thaw” in 2015, when Cuba and the US under President Barack Obama established formal diplomatic relations for the first time. However, the relations severed when Donald Trump took office in 2017.
