Pakistan has issued a strong diplomatic protest, expressing serious concerns over elements of the recent India-Afghanistan Joint Statement and remarks made by Afghan Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi during his visit to New Delhi. The Foreign Office, in a strongly worded communication, conveyed that the reference to Jammu and Kashmir as an integral part of India constitutes a “clear violation” of relevant UN Security Council resolutions and disregards the legal status of the “disputed territory”.
Islamabad asserted that the joint statement is “highly insensitive to the sacrifices and sentiments of the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK)” in their “just struggle for the right to self-determination”. This sharp reaction underscores Pakistan’s unwavering, albeit internationally contested, stance on the Kashmir issue, which remains central to its foreign policy.
Furthermore, Islamabad “strongly rejected” the Afghan acting foreign minister’s assertion that terrorism is solely Pakistan’s internal problem. The Foreign Office countered that Pakistan has repeatedly shared concrete details of cross-border terrorists operating from Afghan soil. Simultaneously, Pakistan announced its firm resolve to regulate the presence of foreign nationals, stating that, like all other sovereign countries, it has the right to manage its borders and ensure the security of its people. The statement highlighted that Pakistan has “generously hosted nearly four million Afghans for over four decades”, but declared that with peace gradually returning to Afghanistan, it is time for unauthorised Afghan nationals to return to their country.
According to top intelligence sources in New Delhi, Pakistan’s forceful reaction is symptomatic of a nation “rattled after failed diplomacy” in the region. The sources firmly reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir is an “integral part of India and will remain so”, stressing that India does not require “dictation on diplomacy” regarding its foreign engagements.
