Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has invited INDIA bloc leaders, civil society members and student organisations for a high tea at his residence on Tuesday, as the opposition steps up its campaign over alleged voter deletions and electoral irregularities.
A joint press conference of INDIA bloc leaders will also be held in the afternoon, followed by tea at Gandhi’s residence at 5, Sunehri Bagh Road, New Delhi, at 4 pm, according to the invitation.
The developments come after opposition leaders marched towards the Supreme Court in a show of protest against alleged “vote chori” and irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
INDIA Bloc Plans Next Step After March
The invitation followed the opposition’s ‘March for Democracy’ in central Delhi on Monday, which brought together several INDIA bloc leaders, activists and civil society members.
Among those who joined the march were Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, CPI leader D Raja, CPI(M) leader M A Baby, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule.
The protesters moved through a heavily barricaded route near Connaught Place before being stopped at the second barricade on Bhagwan Dass Road. Senior opposition leaders later approached the Supreme Court with a joint petition challenging alleged electoral irregularities.
The petition names the Election Commission of India, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi as respondents.
SC Registry Flags Defects In Plea
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court registry has flagged more than 10 defects in the petition filed by Gandhi and other opposition leaders, sources said.
The registry has reportedly sought a clear copy of the identity card of Kharge, one of the co-petitioners, and pointed out illegible or missing pages in the filing. It also noted a shortfall of more than Rs 200 in the court fee.
The petition seeks an independent committee headed by a retired Supreme Court judge, with technical experts and other eminent citizens, to audit deletions and modifications made during the SIR process within a fixed timeframe.
