QS World University Rankings 2027: IIT Delhi climbed five places to secure the 118th position globally. IIT Bombay slipped to 134th place this year from 129 last year.

The QS World University Rankings 2027 have been released, with IIT Delhi emerging as the top-ranked Indian institution once again. The institute climbed five places to secure the 118th position globally (from 123rd last year) — marking the highest rank ever achieved by an Indian university, a milestone first reached by IIT Bombay in the 2025 rankings.
IIT Bombay, which had previously led among Indian institutions, slipped to 134th place this year from 129. Notably, it had also dropped 11 positions in the previous rankings.
MIT Secures Rank 1 For 15th Consecutive Year
Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) continues its dominance, retaining the number one position for the 15th consecutive year. The institute also leads across several academic disciplines.
This global ranking is released by an organisation named Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), considered an expert in education and study abroad worldwide. The QS Ranking evaluates universities not just by their name, but on factors such as academic quality, research output, employer reputation, and the number of international students.

Top 5 universities in the QS World University Rankings
This year’s rankings saw fierce competition among the world’s leading educational institutions. As usual, American and British universities dominated. The top 5 universities in the world are:
1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), US
2. Imperial College London, UK
3. Stanford University, US – tied (also ranked second)
4. University of Oxford, UK
5. Harvard University, US
According to the QS rankings, MIT scores exceptionally well on parameters such as academic reputation, faculty-student ratio, and research citations. The environment here not only imparts theoretical knowledge but also prepares students to become global leaders and innovators.
In addition to topping the overall rankings, MIT secured the number one position in 12 subjects, including Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, Statistics, Linguistics, Materials Science, and Engineering and Technology.
The institute also ranked second globally in seven other disciplines, including Architecture, History of Art, Biological Sciences, Economics, Marketing, Natural Sciences, and Statistics—highlighting its academic strength across both STEM and non-STEM fields.
