Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday announced that boosting imports of Indian goods will be a key topic during his upcoming discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking at a forum ahead of his two-day visit to India, Putin stated that the goal is to elevate cooperation India to a “qualitatively new level,” with a focus on expanding cooperation in sectors such as energy, space, industry, and agriculture

The Russian President stressed that Moscow aims to strengthen its technological collaboration with both India and China through joint projects in various fields.

“We aim to elevate cooperation with the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of India to a qualitatively new level by strengthening its technological component. This is the objective of numerous joint projects in energy, industry, space, agriculture, and other sectors,” he noted.

The Russian leader further added, “We have established a substantive dialogue on economic issues with the President of the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Xi Jinping. We will also discuss these topics in detail during the upcoming visit to India with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including increasing imports of Indian goods to our market.”

On his first visit to New Delhi in four years for a summit with Prime Minister Modi on December 4, Putin will be accompanied by his Defence Minister Andrei Belousov and a wide-ranging delegation from business and industry.

The Russian President, who arrives on Thursday, will hold talks with PM Modi, during which a plethora of significant outcomes are expected, particularly in the trade and defence sectors, aimed at further solidifying bilateral strategic ties.

The Russian leader’s trip comes at a critical time, as India-US relations are facing tensions, particularly after Washington imposed a substantial 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods, including a 25 per cent levy on New Delhi’s purchase of Russian crude oil.
