Punjab is finally getting its long-overdue moment on the global hockey map.

The Asian Champions Trophy is set to be hosted in the state for the first time, with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann confirming the landmark development.

Matches will be staged across Mohali and Jalandhar, two cities with deep-rooted hockey culture, although exact schedules and formats are still being finalised. The tournament is expected to begin around October 26 or 27.

For a state that has historically produced some of India’s finest hockey players and has long been considered the heartbeat of Indian hockey, it has never hosted an international tournament of this scale until now.

Mann also revealed that the state is set to host an annual Four-Nation Hockey Championship, a move aimed at keeping the international spotlight firmly on Punjab year after year.

“We will work on naming the cup and submit our infrastructure plans soon,” Mann said, underlining the government’s intent to build a sustainable sporting ecosystem rather than just host one-off events.

There’s more on the calendar, too. After a 44-year gap, Jalandhar will host the National U-13 Badminton Championship.

Meanwhile, the popular ‘Khed Wattan Punjab Diyan’ will return in September, bringing together athletes aged 16 to 75 across both rural and urban disciplines.
