In a horrific incident in Punjab, a 23-year-old man allegedly killed a 15-year-old girl before stuffing her body into a suitcase and setting it on fire to destroy evidence. Subsequently, he was arrested.
The minor victim has been identified as the daughter of Usha Rani, a resident of Garhshankar Road in Nawanshahr in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district. The teen was reportedly missing since May 29.
Teen’s Body Stuffed In Suitcase, Burnt
The murder incident came to light after the child’s mother approached the City Nawanshahr Police Station and lodged a complaint after her disappearance. In her complaint to police, the mother alleged that an unidentified individual had lured her daughter away under the pretext of marriage while she was away from home, prompting the police to launch an investigation into the matter.
As the police probe progressed, it was revealed that the accused was none other than the woman’s lover, identified as Gurwinder Singh, alias Gurpreet Gopa, a resident of Jadli village, NDTV reported.
According to Tushar Gupta, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Singh was identified as the main suspect in the case.
During questioning, the accused allegedly confessed to killing the child. The NDTV report mentioned that the accused was in a relationship with the victim’s mother and frequently visited their house, which the deceased girl opposed. The repeated objection by the girl to their relationship reportedly led to disputes and resentment.
On May 29, police said, the accused found the teen alone at her rented accommodation on Garhshankar Road and allegedly strangled her.
Charred Remains Recovered After Confession
According to investigators, the accused allegedly hid the body in a suitcase and took it to a forest area near Khuralgarh village in Hoshiarpur district. Police said he then set the suitcase ablaze in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence.
Acting on the accused’s confession, a police team led by Inspector Avtar Singh, accompanied by forensic experts, conducted a search of the area and recovered charred skeletal remains suspected to be those of the victim. The accused has been taken into custody, while the recovered remains have been sent for forensic analysis. The investigation is ongoing.
