When the intention is strong, success follows. This has been proven true by Simran, a student of Senior Secondary Residential School in Ludhiana. She successfully secured admission to the prestigious five-year BS-MS dual degree programme at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali. This accomplishment is a first for her school, though financial issues persist.
Simran, who earned a seat at IISER, resides in Jalalabad. Her family’s financial hardships are also part of her journey. With limited income, she had to take an education loan of about 8 lakhs for her studies. Her father is a farmer, and her mother works as an ASHA worker. She has two siblings who are also studying, reported News18 Hindi.
Despite these challenges, Simran has excelled academically, securing state ranks in both Class 10 and 12. She completed Class 10 at a government school in Jalalabad but switched schools due to financial constraints during the pandemic. For Class 11 and 12, she attended Meritorious School in Ludhiana, choosing the non-medical stream and working diligently to achieve her dream of becoming a researcher.
Simran has not received any scholarships from the state government and relies entirely on her academic performance to repay her education loan. She took a year off to prepare for the JEE and IISER exams and is now striving for a scholarship through her academic excellence.

Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment has criticised the Ministry of Minority Affairs for not obtaining approval for crucial scholarship schemes aimed at minority students, reported PTI.
In its Eleventh Report on action taken concerning the ministry’s 2024-25 demands for grants, presented in Parliament on Monday, the panel observed that the Pre-Matric, Post-Matric, and Merit-cum-Means scholarships have been on hold since 2022-23, awaiting “harmonisation” with similar schemes from other ministries.
