A man has shared how a simple act of kindness on a flight from Delhi to Pune turned into an emotional experience after he learnt why a little boy had been desperate to sit by the window.
Anup Kumar Bedi, a global fintech executive based in Pune, recalled that he had just settled into his window seat when a boy, around seven years old, approached him with his father and politely asked if he could have the seat.
The boy’s father immediately apologised and clarified that he should not feel obligated to give up his window seat, explaining that the boy had been asking for it since they arrived at the airport.
Bedi, however, happily agreed.
“He rushed to the window, pressed his little hands against the glass for a few moments, smiled, and then, just a few minutes after take-off, rested his head on his father’s shoulder and quietly fell asleep. He slept through almost the entire flight,” Bedi said.
About 20 minutes before landing, the father said that his son had not made much use of the window seat.
“That’s alright,” I replied. “He must have been exhausted.” There was a brief silence. “He is,” his father said softly, according to Bedi.
It was then that the father revealed the heartbreaking reason.
Bedi said that the family had spent the previous eight months in Delhi while the boy underwent treatment for severe aplastic anaemia at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre. The doctors had only recently declared him fit enough to travel home.
Bedi suddenly saw the child differently – not as a boy excited about a window seat, but as a young patient who had spent months fighting a life-threatening illness.
The father then explained why the seat had meant so much to his son.
“He told me, ‘Papa, when we’re above the clouds, I’ll be a little closer to God and I can say thank you for making me better,'” Bedi recalled.
Bedi was left speechless and quietly wiped away tears.
As the passengers were leaving the aircraft, the father thanked Bedi for making his son’s day. Bedi, however, said it was the family that had left a lasting impact on him.
Reflecting on the encounter, he wrote that people often judge others without knowing the struggles they are carrying. Everyone has a story that remains unseen and even a small act of kindness can become a lifelong memory for someone else.
