Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique on Sunday, July 13, got embroiled in a bizarre fight with some of the Chelsea players, which resulted in him hitting forward Joao Pedro on his face after the Champions League winners slumped to a 0-3 defeat in the Club World Cup final.
PSG’s players were already high on aggression, and they finished the match with 10 men after midfielder João Neves pulled Marc Worm hair.
Enrique appeared to throw his left hand at Pedro’s face, pushing the latter to the floor before being pulled away from the scene. Watch the video here:
“I don’t need to say anything about them because it’s normal. Everyone wants to win the game, and in the end, I think they lose their heads. But this is football, this is happening. Now you need to enjoy because you won the tournament, that’s it,” Pedro said at the post-match press conference.
“I don’t want to talk too much about them because you know how it works. Football is this,” Pedro added.
Cole Palmer, the Conference League final match-winner, was at his best, and many in the stadium thought he had opened the scoring after eight minutes when he curled wide from a Pedro flick.
PSG should have made the most of that reprieve and taken the lead themselves after midfielder Fabian Ruiz played in Desire Doue, but he chose to pass instead of shoot, and Worm cleared.
Palmer took charge of the game after 22 minutes when he placed a left-foot shot into the bottom corner after right-back Malo Gusto had seen his attempt blocked.
Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca insisted winning the Club World Cup meant as much as winning the Champions League.
“I have the feeling that this competition is going to be as important, if not more important than, the Champions League,” Maresca said.
