Authorities in Guangdong suspended factories making childlike sex dolls. France and Sweden are investigating AliExpress and other retailers over similar concerns.
The factory which is now under investigation was one of several in southern Guangdong province which were producing customisable dolls with “childlike pornography characteristics”.
A factory in China, accused of making “childlike” sex dolls” has been ordered to halt production amid an investigation by the local authorities.
According to BBC, the customisable dolls were reportedly being sold on major online shopping sites and social media platforms. The authorities in Guangdong province have suspended production at multiple factories in Dongguan and Huizhou.
Last month, online retailer Shein banned the sale of all sex dolls globally after protests against dolls with childlike appearance.
The company said it had “strengthened its keyword blacklist to further prevent attempted circumvention of product listing restrictions by sellers”.
Chinese state-owned news outlet The Paper said the factory which is now under investigation was one of several in southern Guangdong province which were producing customisable dolls with “childlike pornography characteristics”.
According to China Daily, the products, often marketed as “ball-jointed doll (BJD) figurines” or “anime dolls,” ranged from 70 to 140 centimeters in height and were priced from several hundred to thousands of yuan.
Meanwhile, France has launched a probe into AliExpress over the same issue.
Sweden has also said it would be taking action against online retailers selling these types of dolls. “I now start from the principle that electronic commerce companies assume their responsibilities and do everything possible to end the marketing of sexual dolls that resemble children,” Social Services Minister Camilla Waltersson Gronvall told AFP.
“If we see that this evolution does not happen, or is not enough, the government will not hesitate to legislate different means,” she added.
