The government has started preparations for major changes in the technical structure of Aadhaar. ‘Aadhaar Vision 2032’ document is ready. It recommends the adoption of technologies like AI, cloud computing, blockchain and quantum computing. The objective is to make Aadhaar fast, secure and fraud-free. In the new system, facial recognition will be the primary medium instead of fingerprint.
Aadhaar CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar said that the vision is the target of 2032, but preparations are being made keeping in mind the technology beyond that. The technological landscape is rapidly changing with AI and quantum computing.
Three major changes…
- About 9 crore Aadhaar authentications take place every day. Of these, about 1 crore are done through face authentication. The government aims to do 100 crore authentications every month through face recognition.
- Facial recognition will be updated from time to time through AI system and there will be no need to provide biometrics again and again.
- The government has updated the biometrics of 5 crore children and adolescents by December. This process will continue free till September 2026.
Preparation of technical framework
The committee will finalize its draft next month. It will be handed over to UIDAI in March. According to this, a new technical framework of Aadhaar will be ready for the next five years. The current contract will expire in 2027. A new contract will be signed till 2032.
To prepare this document, a committee was formed under the chairmanship of UIDAI Chairman Neelkant Mishra in October last year. This included Vivek Raghavan, co-founder of Sarvam AI, Dheeraj Pandey, founder of Nutanix, Dr. P. Purnachandran of Amrita University, Prof. of Michigan State University. Anil Jain and Mayank Vats of IIT Jodhpur.
