The Tamil festival of Pongal will be celebrated on January 15 (Thursday), followed by Thiruvalluvar Day on January 16 (Friday). Farmers’ Day will then be observed on January 17 (Saturday). To enable people to celebrate Pongal with joy, the Tamil Nadu government is providing ration card holders with one kilogram of sugar, one kilogram of rice, a whole sugarcane, and a cash gift of Rs 3,000.

In addition, the state government has arranged special bus services. At the same time, Southern Railway has announced special trains, allowing those working or studying in different districts to travel to their hometowns and celebrate Pongal with their families.

January is traditionally a holiday-filled month for students, with several public holidays spread across the month. This year, too, January brings multiple breaks, much to the delight of students.

There is also optimism that January 14, the day before Pongal, will be declared a holiday. Every year during the Pongal season, the Tamil Nadu government usually announces a holiday for foodenabling people to travel home. To compensate for these holidays, one Saturday is generally declared a working day.

This year as well, there is hope that food on January 14 will be declared a holiday. If the government makes this announcement, both students and government employees will enjoy a total of five consecutive days off for Pongal.
