Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rahman may visit India for the first time on August 21. Preparations for the visit have started, but some important issues are yet to be agreed between the two countries before finalizing it. The biggest issue among these is that of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
According to sources close to Dhaka, Bangladesh wants that Sheikh Hasina, living in India, should not be allowed to carry out political activities or make statements that influence the politics of Bangladesh.
Tariq Rehman took oath as PM on 17 February. In Bangladesh, a man became the Prime Minister after 35 years.
Bangladesh government angry with Hasina’s statements
Sheikh Hasina has been living in India since her ouster from power in August 2024. Bangladesh alleges that she is continuously giving political statements from India. Dhaka says that this is affecting the internal politics of the country and may increase political instability.
According to Bangladeshi officials, some good signals have been received from India on this issue. But Dhaka wants India’s stand to be more clear, so that there is no misunderstanding regarding this issue before Tariq Rehman’s visit.
Tension increased after the press conference of August 5
Actually, on the 5th of this month, Sheikh Hasina held a virtual press conference. In this, he answered the questions of journalists on the second anniversary of the removal of the Awami League government from power and also expressed his views on the politics of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh government expressed strong objection to this. Dhaka said that Hasina’s public political statement while in India could harm efforts to normalize relations between the two countries.
Bangladesh Foreign Ministry said that India was earlier warned about this but still India allowed them to hold this press conference. It is noteworthy that India had refused to stop Sheikh Hasina’s press conference.
India had said that their program was being organized by a private media organization. The government has nothing to do with this.
Sheikh Hasina left the country on 5 August 2024. She has not been seen since then. This footage is from before he boarded the helicopter.
PM Rahman’s party against his visit to India
There is also political protest in Bangladesh regarding Tariq Rahman’s visit to India. Leaders of ruling party BNP have raised questions on Sheikh Hasina’s political activities in India.
At the same time, the National Citizen Party (NCP), born out of the movement in 2024, has also opposed Tariq Rehman’s visit to India. The NCP leader said that Tariq Rehman should not go to India until a decision is taken on Sheikh Hasina’s extradition and the new framework of India-Bangladesh relations.
Nahid also alleged that Hasina’s press conference in New Delhi took place with the direct or indirect support of the Indian government. According to him, Hasina’s statement from Delhi cannot be considered merely her personal opinion. This also gives an indication of India’s stance.
Despite protests, preparations for the yatra continue
Despite political opposition, preparations are going on for Tariq Rehman’s visit between the two countries. According to Indian media reports, he may come to New Delhi on a two-day visit in the middle of next week.
The date of the journey is said to be 21st or 22nd August. However, there may be a change of one or two days in the final schedule.
India, being the current Chairman of BIMSTEC, has also invited Tariq Rehman to attend the BRICS summit to be held in New Delhi in September. However, whether he will go to this conference or not has not been decided yet.
Bangladesh is demanding diesel from India amid power cuts
The electricity crisis in Bangladesh is becoming increasingly serious. In many parts of the country, electricity is being cut for 8 to 10 hours every day. To deal with the power crisis, Bangladesh has now demanded additional diesel from India.
Bangladesh Energy Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmood had demanded more diesel during his meeting with Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi last week. Mahmood told reporters that there is a pipeline with India, through which Bangladesh gets diesel. He has requested India to increase its supply.
The India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline between India and Bangladesh was started in 2017. There is a 15 year agreement between the two countries. Under this, India has to give 1.80 lakh metric tons of diesel to Bangladesh every year. India has already sent more than 30 thousand tonnes of diesel to Bangladesh in March and April during the recent crisis in West Asia.
