The second purchase of Sig Sauer assault rifles was approved by Rajnath Singh in December 2023.
India placed a second order of 73,000 Sig Sauer assault rifles from the US. According to Times of India sources, India has signed this deal for Rs 837 crore. Earlier in February 2019, under fast-track purchase, India had ordered 72,400 SiG-716 rifles for Rs 647 crore.
The second purchase of rifles was approved by the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) headed by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh in December 2023. After its delivery, the Indian Army will have more than 1.45 lakh Sig Sauh 716 assault rifles.
Due to delay in Russian rifles, India had placed an order with America
In 2018-19, India had ordered AK-203 rifles from Russia to meet the growing need for rifles, but due to delays in receiving this order, India signed a deal for rifles with American firm Sig Sauh in February 2019. In the first order of 72,400 rifles, 66,400 rifles were given to the Army, 4,000 to the Air Force and 2,000 to the Navy. These rifles are being given to the infantry soldiers deployed on the China and Pakistan border. These will gradually replace the INSAS rifles.
Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL), a joint venture of India and Russia, has delivered 35 thousand AK-203 assault rifles to the Indian Army. Their production has been started in 2021 under Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat. The specialty of this rifle is that it can fire 700 rounds in 1 minute, is light in weight and never jams.
35 thousand Kalashnikov rifles were delivered in July 2024
India is manufacturing AK-203 Kalashnikov rifles with the help of Russia at Indo-Russia Rifles Private Limited in Amethi. The pending delivery of 35,000 AK-203 Kalashnikov assault rifles is to be handed over to the army in July 2024. Under the agreement between India and Russia, a total of 6 lakh AK-203 rifles are to be manufactured in 10 years.
