Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Johannesburg, South Africa on Friday, where he is participating in the G-20 summit to be held from 21 to 23 November. This conference is being considered an important opportunity to promote the priorities of the Global South. He addressed the conference on Saturday.
The G20 Summit, being held for the first time on African soil, saw a historic start, and at its inaugural session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Made three big proposals that could change the direction of global development.
What did Prime Minister Modi say in the first session of the G20 summit?
PM Modi said that G20 has been shaping the world economy for many decades, but the current development model has deprived large communities of resources. He clearly said that these models have increased the indiscriminate exploitation of nature and have had the greatest impact on Africa and the Global South. He made three big proposals.
1. Global Traditional Knowledge Repository
The Prime Minister raised the issue of knowledge traditions that have maintained natural balance, social unity and cultural harmony in different parts of the world for centuries.
He said that a global traditional knowledge repository should be created based on India’s “Indian Knowledge Systems” model, so that these experiences of sustainable living can be preserved and passed on to the next generations.
2. G20 Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative
Prime Minister Modi said that the development of Africa is in the interest of the entire world. With this thinking in mind, he announced “G20-Africa Skills Multiplier”.
This initiative will be based on the train-the-trainers model, which will be jointly funded and supported by all G20 countries. The aim is to prepare one million certified trainers in the next 10 years, who will then be able to impart skills to lakhs of youth.
3. G20 initiative on countering the drug-terrorism nexus
The Prime Minister also expressed deep concern over the drug-terror network. He said that synthetic drugs like fentanyl have become a major threat to health, society and national security all over the world.
The G20 should therefore launch a joint operation – the G20 Initiative on Countering the Drug-Terrorism Linkage. This will help in preventing smuggling, illegal financial networks and terrorist funding.
PM Modi reiterated the need to bring the priorities of Africa and the Global South into the mainstream of the G20 and said that India is committed to taking forward the vision of “One Earth, One Family, One Future”.

Posting on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi wrote, delivered speech in the first session of the G20 summit. This session focused on inclusive and sustainable development.
He said that Africa is hosting the G20 Summit for the first time, so now is the right time to re-look at our development parameters and adopt a development model that is inclusive and sustainable in the long run.
PM Modi said that India’s ancient values, especially the principle of holistic humanism, shows the world a better way to move forward.
