NEET UG Leak Row: Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Friday took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the ongoing probe into the NEET-UG leak case, prompting a sharp response from the ruling BJP.

The political tussle broke out during a hearing in the Supreme Court related to the cancellation of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG), after the government informed the court that the Prime Minister was personally monitoring the issue.

Appearing for the Centre, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the bench that the government was taking the matter seriously and that “the PM is personally monitoring the lacuna”.

The Supreme Court had sought details from the government on the investigation into the NEET paper leak and the process being followed to reach conclusions in the probe. During the hearing, Justice J. Narasimha questioned how such an incident could occur despite the existence of a high-powered committee overseeing examination processes.

Reacting to reports of the court proceedings, Rahul Gandhi took a dig at the Prime Minister and said in a post on X, “PM Modi also personally supervised the NEET paper leak.”

BJP Hits Back

The BJP strongly objected to the remark, accusing the Congress leader of making baseless allegations.

Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat described Rahul Gandhi’s statement as “absurd” and said a Leader of Opposition was expected to present facts rather than make sensational allegations.

“These kind of absurd statement from @RahulGandhi reflects the immaturity and irresponsibility with which he approaches every sensitive issue concerning India’s youth,” he said in a post on X.

“A Leader of Opposition is expected to present facts, not make absurd and sensational allegations merely for political attention. Such statements do not strengthen democracy; they weaken public trust and trivialise the genuine concerns of lakhs of aspirants and their families,” he added.

BJP leader Amit Malviya also criticised the Congress MP, calling it “preposterous” to suggest that the Prime Minister had any role in the paper leak. He accused Rahul Gandhi of choosing sensationalism over constructive engagement on issues affecting students.

“It is preposterous, outrageous, and a stretch beyond reason to suggest that Prime Minister Modi personally supervised the NEET paper leak. This is precisely why Rahul Gandhi struggles to be taken seriously on matters of national importance. Time and again, he demonstrates a lack of gravitas and the maturity required to handle serious issues with the thoughtfulness and sensitivity they deserve,” he said in a long post on X.

The political exchange comes amid an ongoing investigation into the NEET-UG paper leak controversy. The examination, conducted on May 3 for admissions to medical courses, was cancelled by the National Testing Agency following reports of a leak. The case is currently being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
