Italian Prime Minister Giordano Meloni arrived in Beijing on Saturday evening on a five-day visit. This is her first visit to China. During her 5-day visit, Meloni will meet President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Keqiang on Monday.
PM Meloni may talk to Chinese leaders about issues such as promoting business between the two countries and ending the war in Ukraine. Italy joined China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in 2019 and was the only G7 country to do so.
After joining this project, the US and Western countries criticized Italy and said that China wants to trap it in a debt trap through this project. Then after becoming the Prime Minister, Meloni decided to separate from BRI in December 2023.
The Italian PM had alleged that through this Xi Jinping is trying to increase his influence abroad. He also said that Italy’s participation in the BRI project was a big mistake. Now, regarding Meloni’s visit, the Chinese newspaper Global Times has written that she has come to Beijing to fix the spoiled relations with China.

The Chinese newspaper wrote- Meloni will have to win the trust of Jinping
The Global Times wrote on Saturday that Meloni will now have to work harder to win China’s trust. She cannot say that she welcomes Chinese investment in her country when the reality is something else. The newspaper alleged that the Meloni government adopts various tactics to stop Chinese investment in Italy.
According to the Chinese newspaper, during this visit of PM Meloni, Italy-China business meet will be organized in Beijing on Sunday and Monday in which representatives of many big Italian companies will be present.
Global Times has quoted experts as saying that Meloni has gone there with the aim of reducing tensions with China. Tensions have been going on between the two countries for the past one year. Through this trip, Meloni wants to open the Chinese market for Italian businessmen and bring Chinese investment to Italy.
The Chinese newspaper wrote that Meloni’s influence in Europe has increased due to the political crisis in France and Germany.

China’s English website China Daily writes that political crisis has arisen in big European countries like France and Germany. Due to this, Italy’s influence in the European Union has increased a lot. Meloni’s visit can also prove to be important for the European Union’s relations with China.
China Daily further wrote that Italy is chairing the G7 this year. In such a situation, it can also work as a better communication between Western countries and China. The newspaper wrote that China-Italy and China-EU relations will depend on the choice of big European leaders like Maloney.
This will be the first visit to China by a European leader since the re-election of European Union President Ursula von der Leyen on July 18, 2024. Currently, the EU’s relations with China have become strained due to the imposition of tariffs on electric vehicles.
Italy is China’s fourth largest trading partner in the European Union. China is Italy’s largest trading partner in Asia. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, trade between the two countries was Rs 6 lakh crore in 2023, which was 7.2% less than in the year 2022.
