Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal used Nike’s own famous tagline to make a direct pitch to the sportswear giant’s leadership, urging the company to step up investments in India.

Goyal met Nike Chief Operating Officer Venkatesh Alagirisamy, Chief Legal Officer Rob Leinwand and Chief Government & Public Affairs Officer Jorge Casimiro on the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

“When it comes to investing in India’s growth story, the message is simple: Just Do It!” Goyal said in a post on X on Friday.

He said the discussions focused on building on Nike’s longstanding engagement with India and exploring ways to deepen its presence in the country.

Focus On Manufacturing And Local Sourcing

The meeting covered opportunities across manufacturing, local sourcing and the broader sports ecosystem, Goyal said.

“We discussed opportunities to build on Nike’s longstanding engagement with India and explored avenues to deepen their presence across manufacturing, local sourcing, and the broader sports ecosystem,” the minister added.

The minister’s pitch comes as India continues to seek greater foreign investment and stronger participation by global companies in domestic manufacturing and supply chains.

Goyal said the meeting with Nike’s senior leadership was “excellent”, while highlighting the potential for the company to expand its engagement with India.

The US sportswear company has maintained a presence in India for years, with its products sold across the country through retail and digital channels.

Goyal’s Wider Trade Push

The Nike meeting was part of a broader round of trade and investment discussions held by Goyal during the G20 ministerial gathering.

In Milwaukee, Goyal held talks with trade counterparts from the US, Canada, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, the European Union, Brazil, Mexico and Poland.

His discussions covered ongoing and proposed trade agreements, market access and investment opportunities. Talks with Canada focused on negotiations for the India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement and the target of taking bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030.

Goyal also discussed the India-GCC free trade agreement with Saudi Arabia and the proposed upgrade of the India-Korea CEPA with South Korea.

With the US, the minister discussed an interim trade agreement, while talks with the EU focused on the India-EU free trade agreement and wider trade priorities.
