Carlsen, representing Team Liquid at the event in the Saudi Arabian Capital City of Riyadh, was up against Nakamura in the final-four of the event following his triumph over Indian Nihal Sarin in the quaterfinal.

Indian Arjun Erigaisi went down in the semifinal of the event to Alireza Firouzja of Team Falcon as the French-Iranian star moved into the summit clash.

Firouzja’s teammate at Falcons, Nakamura, put up a strong fight against the top-ranked Carlsen to take the fixture to Armageddon, which ultimately ended in favour of the Norwegian.

The crowd threw their weight behind Nakamura as they burst out into a loud cheer following the American’s fight as he took the game to the decider, but Carlsen held his nerve to dig out a win and silence the noisy audience who were behind his opponent on the day.

Carlsen produced a move to vanquish his opponent’s queen in Game 4 between the two and opted to give the crowd a piece of his mind as he shushed them.

“It pissed me off when they cheered when Hikaru was winning,” he said reflecting on the celebration at the conclusion of the game.

“I guess it was a combination of both. Obviously this is a match that got out of control completely and it really could have gone either way. It was a total coin flip towards the end,” the Norwegian said.

“But I pulled through. I would say, I am also happy because at some point, if you play like one bad game and ruin it because of that, that’s the only thing, but I played a lot of poor games. Really could have gone either way, so I am super happy,” he added.

“When the bracket broke the way it did, I was quite sure that Alireza would dispatch off his side of the bracket and I would have to beat them both, so that’s fair enough,” Carlsen revealed.

“You usually have to beat your main contenders to win. If I win, I will definitely earn a lot of money; if he wins,” the top-rated player in the world said.

“Team Liquid really needs this cheering for their players in the team championship. There are reasons to be relieved for a lot of people. Hopefully, I can give them more to cheer and be relieved tomorrow,” he concluded.
