‘Pathetic Condition’: Passengers Lash Out As IndiGo Cancellations Trigger Chaos At Several Airports

Long queues, stranded families and heated exchanges dominated Terminal 1 as passengers demanded answers after several last-minute cancellations.

IndiGo issued a statement attributing the widespread disruption to “a multitude of unforeseen operational challenges”.

Chaos intensified across major Indian airports on Thursday as passengers lashed out at IndiGo over large-scale flight cancellations and delays that stretched into a third consecutive day.

India’s largest airline has faced mounting criticism after failing to adequately adjust its roster planning to meet new government regulations, triggering widespread operational disruption.

At Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport, where over 42 IndiGo flights were cancelled, scenes of anger and confusion played out through Wednesday night.

Long queues, stranded families and heated exchanges dominated Terminal 1 as passengers demanded answers after several last-minute cancellations. Routes to Delhi, Kolkata, Goa, Hyderabad and Pune were among the worst affected.

Goa-bound travellers were seen arguing with security personnel after being told their flights were cancelled without any clear explanation. Many said they received no timely updates from the airline.

A passenger flying from Bagdogra to Bengaluru said his flight had been cancelled two days in a row. “I had booked my ticket for ₹17,900 a few days ago. Yesterday the flight was cancelled, and today it has been cancelled again,” he told reporters.

The anger spilled onto social media as well. One user posted on X: “Pathetic condition of @IndiGo6E Indigo flight from Bengaluru to Varanasi 6E897 delayed and there is no one from indigo staff to at least inform about the delay to passengers.”

Another traveller wrote about being stuck for six hours in Mumbai the previous day, only to witness fresh chaos across Bengaluru, Pune and other airports. “The biggest problem isn’t just the cancellations — it’s the complete lack of clear communication. Airlines don’t specify whether a flight is delayed, cancelled, or still uncertain. And if a flight is cancelled, retrieving your luggage is a nightmare. Even if you want to cancel voluntarily due to delays, getting your bags back becomes an even bigger ordeal.”

IndiGo issued a statement attributing the widespread disruption to “a multitude of unforeseen operational challenges”, including minor technology glitches, winter schedule changes, adverse weather, increased congestion in the aviation system, and new government-mandated crew duty-time rules that impacted roster planning.

Authorities at Hyderabad’s RGIA also issued an advisory asking passengers to check flight status before heading to the airport, adding that teams were working with airlines to provide updates and assistance.
