PCI chief Devendra Jhajharia urges Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya to seek CBI probe into para athlete Chirag Tyagi murder, police detain fellow athlete Yash Khatik

Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) president Devendra Jhajharia has appealed to Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya to push for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the killing of para-athlete Chirag Tyagi, describing the incident as one that has sent shockwaves through the country’s para-sports fraternity.
Tyagi, a visually impaired T12 category athlete from Uttar Pradesh, was found dead near Sai Upvan in Ghaziabad on May 30. The national-level gold medallist had reportedly secured qualification for the upcoming Asian Games. Police have detained fellow para-athlete Yash Khatik in connection with the case.
In a letter dated June 3 and addressed to Mandaviya, Jhajharia expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding Tyagi’s death.
“I am writing to bring to your urgent attention the tragic murder of Para Athlete Chirag Tyagi, Class T12 (visually disable), from Uttar Pradesh State, whose untimely death has deeply shaken the para-sports community,” Jhajharia wrote.
He further stated: “The circumstances surrounding his death raise serious concerns that merit an impartial and thorough investigation. Given the gravity of the matter and the need to ensure public confidence in the delivery of justice, the PCI respectfully requests your intervention to recommend a CBI investigation into the murder of Chirag Tyagi.”
However, news agency PTI quoted a Sports Ministry source as indicating that the matter falls outside the ministry’s jurisdiction, noting that decisions related to law and order rest with the state government.
“Law and order is a state subject. The Sports Ministry cannot make any such recommendation,” the source told PTI.
According to investigators, the alleged motive stems from a dispute during a document verification process. Police claim Tyagi had filed a complaint against Khatik, which resulted in the latter’s eligibility being revoked. The development allegedly led to bitterness and a desire for retaliation.
Calling for an independent probe, Jhajharia said, “A central agency inquiry will help establish the facts swiftly and transparently, and will send a strong message that the safety and dignity of our athletes are paramount.”
