The civil defence exercise ‘Operation Shield’ has been postponed to May 31 from May 29. It will be conducted across Jammu and Kashmir to review emergency preparedness.

The comprehensive civil defence exercise named ‘Operation Shield’ in Jammu and Kashmir has been postponed to Saturday, May 31. Initially, the mock drill was scheduled to be conducted on Thursday, May 29.
The mock drill for operational preparedness under ‘Operation Shield’ will be conducted on Saturday across Jammu and Kashmir. The mock drill was originally planned to be carried out in various districts of Punjab, Haryana, and Jammu and Kashmir amid ongoing tension with Pakistan. The drill was scheduled to begin at 5pm. As per media reports, the decision of postponing the drill was taken due to “administrative reasons,” though no further details were immediately provided.
Haryana announced the postponement late on Wednesday. The announcement was made by Home Secretary, Haryana, and IAS Sumita Misra on social media platform X.
“The comprehensive civil defence exercise, “Operation Shield,” which was scheduled to be conducted on Thursday has been postponed. All Deputy Commissioners and other stakeholders have been informed about the same (sic),” Misra tweeted on Wednesday.
Initially, Operation Shield was planned to be conducted across all 22 districts of Haryana between 5 pm and 9 pm. Rajasthan, which had also planned a same civil defence exercise mock drill in all its 41 districts, issued a similar order for postponement. Similarly, Chandigarh also postponed the mock drill, clarifying that there would be “no blackout or mock drill” on Thursday.
Punjab To Conduct Drill on June 3
Further, Punjab requested a postponement of the exercise due to its civil defence staff currently undergoing training with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The Centre approved Punjab’s proposal to conduct the drill on June 3.
These mock drills were announced days after similar mock drills were conducted across the nation to review the readiness during emergencies like war, missile attacks, or aerial strikes. These mock drills were carried out just a few hours before India retaliated Pahalgam terror attack by launching ‘Operation Sindoor’ against terrorists in Pakistan.
The military operation successfully targeted nine terrorist sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir in response to the April 22 terror attack which had claimed 26 lives, mostly of tourists.
The second drill aims to review emergency preparedness and address lapses that came to fore during the first exercise held on May 7.
