North Korea on Wednesday condemned ongoing US-South Korea military exercises as an “open threat” to its security, while vowing to exercise its right to self-defence against what it called military threats from the allies.

A commentary by North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) described the 11-day Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise as the “most immediate and open threat” to North Korea and regional security. It also called the US and South Korea “warmongers” responsible for raising tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

The commentary did not mention US President Donald Trump’s decision to reduce American participation in the drills or his outreach to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
