National School of Drama (NSD) Director Chittaranjan Tripathi has supported the demand for setting up a regional center of NSD in Rajasthan. He said, being a theater artiste, he wants NSD to have a center in every state of the country.
At the conclusion of the theater workshop Collage of Kilkari organized in Jaipur, Tripathi said that theater should be a subject in every school. He explained the attitude towards education, art, music and theater in the society with the imaginary theory of ‘Chintu and Pintu’. He said-
There are two types of students in every school. One Pintu, who scores 98 percent marks in mathematics and the other Chintu, scores 85 percent marks. Chintu is also an excellent singer, tabla player or artist. He said that Pintu generally gets more importance in schools.
Teachers consider him as their blue-eyed boy, because the society has assumed that only the one who scores good marks will achieve great things in the future. At the same time, Chintu’s art and talent are not taken that seriously.

Chittaranjan Tripathi said that I want a regional center of NSD to be built in every state.
It is important to consider art as a part of personality development.
Tripathi said sarcastically that as soon as a minister, MP, collector or other dignitary is about to visit a school, suddenly the school administration remembers Chintu. Because the welcome ceremony also requires songs, cultural programs and a presentation on stage. Then the same student, who has been seen as an ordinary person throughout the year, suddenly becomes important.
He said that Chintu and other artist children like him are called, they are taught patriotic songs, they are made to prepare for performances on stage and they are given special importance for some time. At that time Chintu feels that his art is being appreciated.
Tripathi said that the sad situation is that as soon as the program ends, the same honor ends. There is applause on the stage, the guests praise the children, but the very next day Chintu is back in the same situation, where he is considered only a student doing extra activities.
According to Tripathi, the biggest irony of society and education system is that art, music and theater are used, but they are not accepted as a main part of education and personality development.

I want NSD center to be there in every state
Chittaranjan Tripathi said that being a theater artist, his first wish is to establish a regional center of NSD in every state of the country including Rajasthan. This will reduce the need for local artists to come to Delhi and they will be able to get high level theater training in their own state. However, mere desire is not enough for this, but resources, infrastructure and coordination between governments are also necessary.
Tripathi said that when the National School of Drama was established, its basic concept included the feeling that theater education and training should reach different states of the country. But for the establishment of any new centre, there are many basic requirements like building, land, financial resources, technical facilities and trained human resources.

In the program he also explained the theory of Chintu and Pintu.
Consensus is necessary at the government level
Tripathi clarified that being the director of NSD, he did not want to make any promise which was not practically within his jurisdiction. He said that the establishment of any new center can be possible only with mutual consent and cooperation between the Central and State Governments.
He said that if I sit on the stage and say that NSD center will start in Rajasthan from tomorrow, then that would not be right. This is a long process, which requires discussion at the government level, arrangement of resources and concrete planning.
Tripathi said that Rajasthan’s cultural heritage, folk theater traditions and theatrical activity make it suitable for such a centre. A large number of youth in the state want to join theatre, folk art and acting. If a regional center of NSD is established here, then the artists of the state can get national level training and opportunities.

Chittaranjan Tripathi was welcomed in Jaipur as per Rajasthani tradition.
Theater relieves stress, gives depth to life
Chittaranjan Tripathi said that the tradition of Indian theater is thousands of years old. It is also clearly written in Bharatmuni’s Natyashastra that drama removes sorrow, depression and stress.
He said that theater gives an opportunity to a person to understand different viewpoints through different characters. When a child plays the role of a police officer, farmer, king or any common man on stage, he learns to see the world from a new perspective. This process makes him more sensitive and intelligent.”
There should be theater subject in every school
Tripathi said that today theater is seen as an extra-curricular activity in schools, whereas it should be an integral part of education. He said that wherever I go, I tell schools that theater should be included as a subject.
Theater builds self-confidence in children. It not only teaches acting, but also teaches the way of living life. Whether a child becomes a doctor, engineer or goes into any other field, association with theater makes him a better person.

He said that currently theater workshops are going on at different places across the country.
Theater workshops are running in 92 cities
Giving information about the works of NSD, he said that earlier 10-15 workshops were organized during summer holidays, but this year 92 theater workshops are being organized across the country within a month.
We want theater to reach villages, towns and children who may never get the opportunity to study in a National School of Drama. Today NSD is conducting theater workshops not only with artistes but also with the transgender community, senior citizens, jail inmates, slum children, remand home children and deprived sections of the society.
The British made theater ‘extracurricular’
Tripathi said that in the Indian tradition, art and drama were given the status of the fifth Veda. Drama halls were built in temples so that people could gain mental energy by watching plays after a tiring day.
He said that theater was once mainstream. After the arrival of the British, it was gradually made an ‘extracurricular activity’. Now the time has come to bring it into the mainstream again.
