Employee Provident Fund Organization i.e. EPFO has increased its digital services on Umang App. Now PF account holders can generate, activate and authenticate their Universal Account Number i.e. UAN from mobile itself through Aadhaar-based face-authentication.
This initiative of the organization aims to ease access to EPFO services and eliminate dependence on physical or manual verification.
Announcing this on social media platform X, the Ministry of Labor and Employment said that members can now allot, activate and authenticate UAN directly through the Umang app.
After UAN is activated, members will be able to avail various facilities like checking EPF balance, downloading passbook, tracking claim status and updating KYC details from the comfort of their home.
Generate and activate new UAN like this
This facility is especially beneficial for those employees who are joining the EPF system for the first time. To create a new UAN, the employee must have a valid Aadhaar number, Aadhaar-linked mobile number and ‘Aadhaar Face RD’ application.
- First of all, open Umang app and go to ‘UAN Allotment and Activation’ option.
- Enter your Aadhaar number, mobile number and give consent for Aadhaar validation.
- After this an OTP will come on your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- The system will automatically check whether any UAN is first linked to your Aadhaar or not.
- If no old UAN is found, you will be sent to the face-authentication process.
- After giving consent, the face will be scanned through the ‘Aadhaar Face RD’ app.
- Once the verification is successful, a new UAN will be generated and sent to your registered mobile number.

Old UAN holders will also be able to do activation from mobile
Employees whose UAN has already been generated but has not been activated yet, can use the ‘UAN Activation’ option available on the Umang app.
For this, the user will have to give consent by entering his UAN, Aadhaar number and mobile number. After completion of OTP verification, the process of face-authentication will have to be completed through the UIDAI system.
UAN will be activated once the verification is completed. The employee will receive UAN and a temporary password through SMS. With this, the verified photo and address of the employee will be automatically updated in the EPFO database.
Face-authentication facility for activated UAN
For those members whose UAN is already activated, the option of ‘Face Authentication of Already Activated UANs’ has been provided on the app.
In this process, members will complete face-authentication by giving their consent. After this, the UIDAI system will verify the identity and get the relevant information related to Aadhaar and UAN.
The verified details will be used to automatically update EPFO records, eliminating the need for separate authentication.
What to do if authentication fails?
Some technical issues may occur during the process on the app. Such as wrong Aadhaar or mobile number, OTP not being received, face-authentication failing or seeing the message that UAN already exists.
If such a situation arises, users can re-enter their details, ask for OTP again or try face-scan again. If the issue persists, members are advised to contact the helpdesk or support team.
Umang App has been developed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and National e-Governance Department (NeGD). This app brings many government services on a single digital platform. With this new service of EPFO, important work related to PF has now come on a completely digital and self-service model.
Knowledge Part: What is ‘Aadhaar Face RD’ app and how does it work?
Aadhaar Face RD (Facial Authentication Technology) is an official app developed by UIDAI. Through this, the user does not need any biometric device like fingerprint or iris scanner.
It performs a live facial scan using only the front camera of your smartphone and instantly confirms the identity by matching it with the UIDAI database.
