Wedding bells briefly took over the US Open on Friday when the jumbotron captured a fan’s marriage proposal during Aryna Sabalenka’s third-round victory.
As Sabalenka closed in on a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win over Canada’s Leylah Fernandez, the cameras caught the emotional moment in the stands: a man dropped to one knee, pulled a ring from his pocket, and asked his partner to marry him.
Shocked, she covered her face with her hands before nodding through tears of joy, as the crowds erupted in celebration.
‘I was just trying not to start smiling’
Though the Arthur Ashe crowd celebrated the scene, Sabalenka kept her game face on.
“I think it’s the first time that someone proposed during my match, and it was a very sweet moment, but I was just trying not to start like smiling because it’s super cute, and I believe they are super happy right now,” Sabalenka told reporters at the post-match presser.
“I was just trying to keep focusing on my game. It was a great moment. And as I said on court, I wish them a happy marriage.”
In the press room, she allowed herself a joke when asked if the grand gesture might inspire copycats.
“I looked at my boyfriend. No pressure,” she quipped with a smile.

Sabalenka’s romance
Sabalenka, 26, has been dating Brazilian entrepreneur Georgios Frangulis, founder and CEO of Oakberry, since 2023. Their relationship became public when she partnered with his company to release a signature açaí bowl ahead of this year’s US Open.
For all the romantic distractions in the stands, Sabalenka’s focus remains firmly on her title defense.
With the straight-sets win over Fernandez, she extended her remarkable streak of tie-break victories and moved into the fourth round, where she will face off against Spain’s Cristina Bucșa.
