The release of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) India Rankings 2026 has been delayed as authorities review research papers and data submitted by higher education institutions. The Ministry of Education has not yet announced a new date for releasing the rankings, reported Moneycontrol.

The delay comes amid concerns over retracted research papers included in institutional submissions. The National Board of Accreditation (NBA) is reviewing the data to check the accuracy of research information used to assess colleges and universities.

Research papers and citations are among the factors considered in the NIRF rankings. Authorities are examining how retracted papers and the citations linked to them have affected institutions’ scores.

The government is also considering stricter action against institutions that repeatedly submit questionable research data. One proposal is to prevent repeat offenders from taking part in future NIRF rankings. However, this measure has not been confirmed as a final decision.

The review could affect institutions whose rankings depend heavily on research performance. If their research scores are reduced, their final positions in the rankings could also change.

Concerns over research quality have grown in recent years. According to figures from Retraction Watch cited in media reports, 887 research papers from India were retracted in 2025. India ranked second globally in the number of retractions, behind China.

The issue has raised questions about how research publications and citations are checked when institutions submit data for national rankings.

Students often use NIRF rankings to compare colleges and universities before applying for admission. The rankings cover several categories, including overall performance, universities, engineering, management and medical education.

The delay means students will have to wait longer for the updated 2026 rankings. The ongoing review is aimed at checking the research data before the final rankings are released.

The Ministry of Education has not announced a revised release date. Students and institutions should check the official NIRF website for updates.
