West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday said the person lynched by a mob in connection with the rape and murder of a 11-year-old girl in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas, was innocent.
Adhikari directed Director General of Police Sidd Nath Gupta to submit a report in the case and assured strict action against 200 individuals who allegedly vandalised public property, damaged police vehicles and railway tracks during a protest against the crime.
“The youth killed in the mob lynching, Indrajit Mondal, was also innocent. This is what the police told me; these are not my words. He (Mondal) will also get justice. I have met his family members also,” he was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
The minor girl’s body was found stuffed inside a sack and was recovered from a pond on Sunday, triggering widespread outrage among locals who blocked the Baruipur-Joynagar Road, burnt tyres and vandalised police vehiclesdemanding immediate action against those responsible. Inspector General of Police (Presidency Range) Kankarprasad Barui said an enraged mob beat a man to death on suspicion of his involvement in the girl’s death.
The Chief Minister said he had asked the DGP to submit a report within 72 hours, after which strict action would be taken accordingly. He also asserted that the teenage girl’s family was satisfied with the police investigation.
“Those who have instigated from behind, including those rejected by the people in the recent (assembly) elections, those who gained one seat from zero, and also some radical and anti-national forces, have been identified. Their (radical and anti-national) call recordings have been collected by the STF under the DGP. The government will teach them proper lessons,” he said.
Three Arrested In Rape-Murder Case
So far, three people have been arrested in connection with the rape-murder case, while three others have been detained for questioning. The incident has ignited a political row between the former CM Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP government.
West Bengal Police have arrested the principal accused, Ananda Sardar, in the case. The investigation gathered pace after the first CCTV footage linked to the incident surfaced, providing investigators with a fresh lead.
The autopsy report of the girl revealed sexual assault, including injuries to her private parts, bite marks on her body and a severe head injury. The report also revealed that water accumulated in her lungs and stomach as she was thrown into a pond after being subjected to the alleged torture.
A six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted to investigate the case. Authorities have also registered four FIRs as part of the ongoing probe into the rape-murder and lynching incident.
