The Central Government has issued a notification for the formation of Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI) to regulate online gaming in the country. This new system will become effective in the entire country from May 1 under the Online Gaming Regulation Act-2025. Under the new rules, the validity of the certificate has been doubled, giving a big relief to the gaming companies. IT Secretary S. Krishnan said that the government has adopted a light-touch regulatory approach for the gaming industry, so that there is no unnecessary burden on startups and developers. Validity of certificate increased from 5 to 10 years. Under the new rules, the biggest change has been made regarding the certification of online games. Now the validity of the certificate given to any game will be 10 years instead of 5 years. With this, game developers will not have to go through the renewal process again and again. The government believes that this will promote ease of doing business. Games without money do not require registration: According to the IT Secretary, it will not be mandatory to register those games which do not involve real money transactions. S. Krishnan said that most non-real money games can run without any registration. This process has been kept completely optional for them. However, games which are played on a large level or involve financial transactions will have to be registered as per notification. Classification of games will be done in three ways. The authority has decided three ways to decide which category the games will be placed in… A time limit of 90 days has been set to complete the process of classification of any game. Now there will be no need for mandatory determination for every game. Changes in the rules of two-tier system promotion and refund for user safety. The IT Secretary informed that the provisions related to game promotion have been removed from the new guidelines. Now different ministries will be able to design promotion schemes according to their plans. The concept of material change has also been removed, so that disputes do not arise between companies and the government. Rules related to refund have also been removed, because the government believes that this problem has already been resolved. Opinion taken from 2,500 stakeholders Before finalizing these rules, the government had taken suggestions from about 2,500 people including industry bodies, law-knowledgeable firms and academic experts. Stakeholders had suggested clarifying the definition of gaming and improving the authority structure, which have been included in the new notification. What is Online Gaming Authority of India? The Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI) will be a six-member team. Apart from the IT Ministry, representatives of the Home Ministry will also participate in it.
