Nepal Floods Live Updates: Rescue operations continued across flood-hit Nepal and Tibet on Saturday after a glacial collapse unleashed a torrent of water, ice, rock and debris through the Himalayas. At least 579 people have died in Nepal and seven in Tibet, while more than 2,400 remain missing on both sides of the border.
The missing tally stands at 1,924 in Nepal and 558 in Tibet, including more than 540 foreign nationals, many of them Hindu pilgrims from India. India said 84 nationals have been rescued, 149 have crossed safely into Nepal from China, around 400 remain safe in China, while about 320 Indians are still missing or uncontactable due to communication disruptions.
The Gyirong border complex was among the worst-hit areas. Chinese rescuers reached the site for the first time on Friday and found “nothing but ruins”. Rescue operations were briefly halted after a barrier lake began overflowing, before resuming once the immediate threat eased.
The risk of further flooding remains, with Nepal monitoring two barrier lakes upstream and Chinese experts warning that unstable glacial lakes could trigger fresh surges.
