Nepal Floods: 108 Indians Rescued, 275 Missing; Govt Coordinating Relief Ops With Kathmandu, China

Nepal Floods: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday informed that at least 108 Indian nationals have been rescued from flood-hit Nepal and re-established contact with 50 others who had earlier been untraceable. However, over 275 Indian nationals and 128 persons of Indian origin remain missing

The MEA said in an official statement that 598 Indian nationals have safely crossed into Nepal from China in the last two days, and around 900 Indians are stranded in China, but are safe and contactable.

This came as rescue operations continued across flood-hit Nepal and Tibet on Saturday after a glacial collapse unleashed a torrent of water, ice, rock and debris through the Himalayas. At least 675 deaths have been reported so far, while nearly 3,000 people are missing in Nepal and Tibet.

India Coordinating Rescue Ops With Nepal, China

The government has been working in close coordination with the Nepali and Chinese authorities for the early rescue and relief efforts of those affected by the floods, the MEA said, adding that a round-the-clock Control Room has been established in the MEA and 24/7 helplines are operational in the embassies in Kathmandu and Beijing.

“Our Embassies in Kathmandu and Beijing have also remained engaged with all the relevant stakeholders to ensure effective coordination of search, rescue and relief efforts, in connection with Indian nationals impacted by the flash flood,” the statement read.

Furthermore, the Indian missions are also working to ensure the safety and well-being of all rescued Indian nationals. The MEA is monitoring and facilitating the transit of Indian nationals returning from the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra through Nepal.
