Mahanagar Gas hikes CNG rates to ₹88/kg and domestic PNG by ₹1/SCM in Mumbai from September 1, citing surging import costs amid the Middle East crisis.

The revised rates came into effect from midnight of August 31, going into the morning of September 1, 2026.
Mumbai commuters will pay more to fuel their vehicles from Tuesday, with Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) hiking CNG prices by ₹2 per kg to ₹88, citing a spike in imported gas costs amid the escalating Middle East conflict. Domestic PNG prices have also risen by ₹1 per SCM, effective immediately.
MGL, in an official statement issued on Tuesday, said the ongoing crisis in West Asia has pushed up input gas prices linked to international indices, forcing the company to revise CNG rates across all its geographical areas.
A major portion of the input gas for the CNG segment is sourced through imported Spot RLNG, and rising demand for CNG has compounded the cost pressure, the company said. The revised rates came into effect from midnight of August 31, going into the morning of September 1, 2026.
Why Are Prices Rising Now?
MGL attributed the hike squarely to the Middle East crisis, saying the conflict has driven up international gas indices that determine input costs. With CNG demand continuing to rise, the company said it now has to source a greater share of gas at higher spot RLNG rates to keep up with consumption — costs it said it can only “partially offset” through the price revision.
What Does This Mean For Mumbai Households And Commuters?
Vehicle owners running on CNG will see their per-kg cost rise from ₹86 to ₹88 in and around Mumbai, while households on piped domestic gas connections will pay ₹1 more per standard cubic metre (SCM). MGL said it remains committed to keeping natural gas an affordable, cleaner fuel option even as it navigates global cost pressures.
Is More Relief — Or More Pain — In Sight?
MGL has not indicated whether further hikes are likely, saying only that it continues to “explore avenues to optimise costs and pass on benefits to consumers.”
With Spot RLNG prices tied to volatile international benchmarks, further revisions will depend on how the Middle East situation develops.
