The Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE) has revised the rules governing internal choices in question papers for Classes 9 to 12, effective from the 2026 –27 academic session. Under the new guidelines, students will no longer get internal options in two-mark very short-answer questions in core subjects. However, the existing system of internal choices will continue for three-mark and four-mark questions.

The Board has also introduced changes for students studying skill-based subjects under the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF). Under the revised rules, these students will get internal choices in five-mark long-answer questions and seven-mark essay-type questions. The changes will affect how students prepare for the 2027 exams.

The MPBSE issued a notice regarding the revised internal-choice system on October 15, 2026. According to the new guidelines, the availability of options will depend on the marks assigned to a question and the category of subject. Internal choices will no longer be provided uniformly across all question types.

The revisions apply to question paper patterns for the 2026–27 academic session, with changes affecting both core and skill-based subjects.

The most significant change concerns two-mark very short-answer questions in core subjects. Previously, students could choose between two questions and attempt one according to their preparation. Under the revised rules, this facility has been discontinued for this category.

Students will therefore need to prepare thoroughly for all two-mark questions, as they will no longer be able to rely on an alternative question where an internal choice was previously available.

The Board has retained the existing arrangement for three-mark short-answer questions in core subjects. Students will continue to receive internal choices in this category wherever provided in the question paper.

This means the revised rules do not eliminate internal choices from all questions. Students will still have the flexibility to choose between alternatives in eligible three-mark questions.

There is no change to the internal-choice arrangement for four-mark long-answer questions in core subjects. Students will continue to receive alternatives in this category under the existing pattern.

As a result, the main change for core subjects is limited to two-mark very short-answer questions, while the previous arrangements for three-mark and four-mark questions remain in place.

The Board has also revised the question paper pattern for subjects covered under the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF).

Under the updated rules, students studying these skill-based subjects will receive internal choices in five-mark long-answer questions, and seven-mark essay-type questions. Previously, internal choices were not provided in these two categories under the system described in the Board’s notice. The revised arrangement will give students additional flexibility when attempting these questions.

MP Board Exam 2027: Old Rules vs New Rules

The revised guidelines distinguish between core subjects and NSQF skill-based subjects.

Core subjects: Internal choices have been removed from two-mark very short-answer questions.

Three-mark questions: The existing internal-choice system will continue.

Four-mark questions: The existing internal-choice system will continue.

NSQF subjects: Internal choices will now be available in five-mark long-answer and seven-mark essay-type questions.

Students should familiarise themselves with these changes and understand which question types will offer alternatives under the revised pattern.

What Is Internal Choice in Board Exams?

Internal choice refers to a provision in which a question paper offers an alternative question in place of a particular question. Students can answer one of the alternatives according to the instructions provided in the paper.

This arrangement allows students to select the question they are better prepared to answer. However, internal choices are available only for questions specifically designated by the Board; students cannot skip questions at their discretion.

Under the applicable rules, students who fail one or more subjects in the first exam may be eligible to appear in the second exam. Students who were absent from an exam may also be eligible, subject to the Board’s conditions.

Students who have passed the first exam can also use the facility to improve their marks, as permitted under the rules. They must apply through the school or institution where they registered for the first examination and pay the prescribed fee.
