Israel, Hamas Announce Ceasefire and Hostage Deal

Israel and Hamas have reached a long-awaited ceasefire and hostage release agreement, the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s plan to end the devastating Gaza war. The conflict, which has claimed more than 67,000 lives and reshaped the Middle East’s political landscape, may now be approaching a fragile but crucial turning point.

The ceasefire announcement has drawn broad international support. President Trump described the deal as a “historic and unprecedented event,” highlighting the planned release of hostages, Israeli troop withdrawals to agreed positions, and the establishment of a framework for lasting peace. He credited Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey for their pivotal mediating roles.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the development as a reflection of “strong leadership,” expressing hope that it would bring “relief to Gaza’s people and pave the way for enduring peace.”

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called it “a moment of profound relief,” particularly for the hostages, their families, and civilians who have endured immense suffering. Starmer urged the immediate implementation of the deal and insisted on unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the breakthrough, urging all parties to “abide fully by the terms of the agreement” and ensure the dignified release of all hostages. He emphasised the need for a permanent ceasefire and unimpeded entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, declaring, “The fighting must stop once and for all. The suffering must end.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen commended the diplomatic efforts of the United States, Qatar, Egypt, and Türkiye, and voiced the EU’s readiness to assist with Gaza’s reconstruction. “All hostages must be released safely. A permanent ceasefire must be established,” she said. “Today’s opportunity should be seized – it’s a chance to forge a credible political path toward lasting peace anchored in the two-state solution.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he would present the deal to his cabinet for approval, calling it a “critical step toward securing our citizens and hostages.” Hamas officials also acknowledged the agreement, urging international guarantors to ensure its “full and fair implementation without delay.”

Meanwhile, the ceasefire announcement has sparked celebrations in Gaza and parts of Israel, where citizens expressed cautious optimism after years of bloodshed.
