Telecom regulator TRAI, taking a big step in the interest of customers, has released a new draft of ‘Telecom Consumer Protection Regulations, 2026’. Its main objective is- ‘If you don’t want data, then why pay for it?’ TRAI has sought suggestions from all parties on this, then it will be finalized. What is the new proposal? Currently, companies offer ‘call-only-SMS’ packs for a limited period of time. Due to this, many customers are forced to take expensive plans with data. Now TRAI has proposed that companies will have to bring ‘only call and SMS’ plans of the same duration as the data plans with validity of 7, 28, 56 or 84 days. How much lower will prices go? Since 50-70% of the expenditure on mobile plans is for data, if the new rule is implemented, the price of only call-SMS plans may be reduced to less than half. For example, a plan worth Rs 300 can be available for Rs 100 to Rs 150. Who benefits? Feature phone users and elderly people who do not use data. Those who keep the second SIM only for calls. Apart from this, those who have WiFi in their homes. This will be beneficial for them also. Apps of 1600 and 140 series will not be able to block important calls. TRAI has made it clear that call management apps like Truecaller cannot block calls of 1600 and 140 series.
