Stepping away from something an individual has worked hard for is not easy, but a senior engineering executive who spent over two decades at Microsoft decided to leave his career to spend more time with his ageing parents in India. Kesavan Shanmugam, ex-Vice President of Engineering for Excel Copilot and Agentic AI at the technology giant, announced his retirement in a LinkedIn post, saying he chose to prioritise family and friends.

In the post, he acknowledged that leaving Microsoft was not an easy decision, particularly because he continued to enjoy his work and was involved in exciting projects. However, he said that spending more time with his family was worth the trade-off.

“It Is The Right Trade-Off For Me”

“After 23 years at Microsoft, I am retiring today to spend more time with my ageing parents in India,” he said. “It was difficult to walk away from the exciting work in Excel Copilot and the amazing colleagues at Microsoft. But it is also the right trade-off for me – to focus my energy on family and friends.”

Reflecting on his long association with the company, Shanmugam thanked Microsoft for giving him the flexibility to make the decision. He also thanked colleagues who had made his professional journey rewarding.

“I am deeply grateful to Microsoft for making it possible to even make such a tradeoff. And a huge thanks to everyone at Microsoft, past and present, who made my journey at Microsoft fun, exciting and fulfilling,” he added.

Internet Praises Him For Choosing To Look After Parents

Shanmugam’s announcement received hundreds of reactions on LinkedIn, with many users appreciating his decision to prioritise his ageing parents over his career.

An individual said, “That’s probably one of the best decisions you can take. As someone who just lost one parent, I will urge you highly to try your best to keep them close.”

“I don’t personally know you, brother, but your decision to prioritise your parents garnered my attention and my best wishes to you,” another wrote.

Someone commented, “My sincere respect and appreciation for your decision. I truly understand what it means to step away from a career to care for our ageing parents. It takes love, courage, and a heart that puts family first. Some of life’s most meaningful responsibilities never appear on a résumé, but they leave the deepest mark on our hearts.”
