US First Lady Melania Trump returned to the public eye on Friday after nearly a month away from public events, joking about the attention her absence had drawn.
“Good afternoon. I heard you missed me. Here I am,” Melania said with a chuckle as she opened an event in the White House Rose Garden.
The 56-year-old first lady and President Donald Trump, 80, walked hand in hand from the Oval Office to the podium. Trump then sat in the audience as Melania addressed the gathering.
The event marked a donation from IndyCar and Fox Corporation to fund university scholarships, ahead of an IndyCar race through the streets of Washington to mark America’s 250th anniversary.
Where Was Melania?
Melania’s last public appearance was on July 19, when she attended the FIFA World Cup final with Trump at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. Since then, she had skipped several high-profile events, including the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on July 24, Senator Lindsey Graham’s funeral on July 28 and a ceremony marking the return of the remains of four US service members.
Her lower public profile has drawn attention during Trump’s second term. An NBC analysis said she had carried out about half as many public events as she did at the same point in her first term.
Newsweek’s review of photographs counted 34 public appearances for Melania in 2026 so far, while a separate Daily Beast count put the figure at 38 days.
Spotlight On Trump Aide Natalie Harp
Melania’s return also comes amid fresh scrutiny of Trump’s executive assistant Natalie Harp, 35, who has become a near-constant presence around the president.
Harp reportedly assists with Trump’s Truth Social account and has travelled with him on Marine One. She has also been seen carrying printed material for Trump, earning her the nickname “the human printer”.
The White House this week pushed back against questions over Harp’s access to Trump after a Democratic Senate candidate questioned why she was among a small group of people who switched flights with the president in Turkey following a security threat.
Harp was not seen at Friday’s Rose Garden event.
