Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti and senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid on Friday paid their respects at the coffin of Iran’s slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran, ahead of the funeral ceremonies scheduled to begin on Saturday.
Mufti became the only non-Shia politician from Jammu and Kashmir to be invited by Iran for the ceremonies. Khurshid, a former external affairs minister and head of the Congress party’s foreign affairs department, represented the Congress after Iran invited party president Mallikarjun Kharge along with Khurshid and Pawan Khera to attend the funeral events.
After paying homage, Mufti wrote on X that it was “an honour” to be in Tehran to express her “deepest condolences and solidarity” over the death of Khamenei, describing him as “a revered leader who dared to stand against the tide and fought for the oppressed”.

Which Other Indian Leaders Are Attending?
Apart from the Opposition leaders, Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and Bihar Governor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain also paid their respects to Khamenei shortly after arriving in Tehran as part of the official Indian delegation attending the funeral ceremonies.
Iran had earlier invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the events.
The Embassy of Iran in India confirmed the arrival of the Indian delegation, saying Margherita and Hasnain had reached Tehran to pay their respects to the late Iranian leader.
Khamenei’s Funeral Ceremonies
The Islamic Republic has scheduled Khamenei’s funeral ceremonies from July 4 to July 9 across several cities.
According to Iranian state media, the programme will begin with a farewell event in Tehran on July 4 and 5, followed by the main funeral procession in the capital on July 6.
Further ceremonies will be held in the holy city of Qom on July 7, while the final burial is scheduled in Khamenei’s hometown of Mashhad on July 9.
Khamenei, 86, who led Iran for thirty-six years, was killed on February 28 during the first day of large-scale US and Israeli air strikes on Tehran, which also triggered the war in West Asia.
Representatives from around 30 countries are expected to attend the funeral ceremonies.
