Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday said Director General of Police RR Swain should be made answerable for the ongoing terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir.
Mufti’s statement came in response to the DGP’s Monday remarks, claiming the leaders of the mainstream parties in Jammu and Kashmir pay frequent visits to the homes of killed terrorists and sympathise with their victims in public.
The DGP also said Pakistan had infiltrated all important aspects of civil society in Jammu and Kashmir when it was in the grip of militancy, with parties cultivating leaders of terror networks for political gains.
Slamming the DGP’s remarks, Mufti questioned the work done by him and the central government in the past six years.
“Our jawans are being killed every day on the border, and there is no investigation on the same on the part of the government of India. They rather blame the mainstream parties,” Mehbooba Mufti said.
“The government of India has been ruling Jammu and Kashmir for the past six years, but what have they done? They put innocent people, be it a local, or a journalist, in jail,” Mufti claimed.
Further slamming the central government, Mufti said, “You are fighting with your own people, and claim militancy is over in the Valley.”
“They do not give verification and refuse passports to people,” she said.
“The Home Minister and the Defence Minister should take note of the terror attacks and casualties in Jammu and Kashmir, and should fix accountability. The maximum casualties have been reported since the deployment of the DGP,” Mehbooba Mufti claimed.
“Locals, regional party leaders, and journalists are not guarding the borders. It is the government’s and the DGP’s responsibility to curb terrorism on the border,” the former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister said.
On Monday, DGP Swain said, “Pakistan successfully infiltrated all important aspects of civil society, thanks to so-called mainstream or regional politics in the valley. There is ample evidence to show that many had mastered the art of running with the hare and hunting with the hound, which left both the common man and the security forces bewildered, frightened, and confused.”
Swain said that while it was allowed to eliminate recruits for terrorism, those responsible for recruitment and arranging (terror) finances were never investigated.
The DGP said Jamiat-i-Islami provided religious and ideological justification to the terrorists.
“It was an open secret that the Jamiat network was not only able to sabotage the government efforts to normalise the situation but also had a terror finance network that played a big role in mobilising street protests,” he said.
